What is VoIP?
VoIP refers to voice calls that are routed over online networks using the Internet Protocol the protocol that serves as the backbone of the internet.
VoIP tends to be relatively cheap. Why?
VoIP calls are simply another application riding over the internet. Essentially, they are no different from emails, instant messages or web pages, which can all be distributed for free between internet-connected machines.
Why do some VoIP services cost money at all then, and why are others free?
A VoIP service can connect users not only with other VoIP customers but also with phone services such as traditional landline and mobile networks. For these calls, VoIP service providers must pay access fees to the landline and wireless operators. VoIP services that never leave the internet calls that are between personal computers equipped with VoIP service are typically free.
What kit do you need to use VoIP?
An internet connection; dial-up is fine, but broadband gives better quality. You'll also need VoIP software. Users can choose a version that loads onto a desktop or laptop computer, which allows the computer to make calls through its modem connection to the internet. The customer uses the computer's built-in microphone and speakers, assuming their machine has such features, so there is often no phone or other kit needed.
But when converting your home phone to a VoIP dialler, an adapter is necessary. The VoIP software is available preinstalled in a separate piece of hardware known as an analogue telephone adapter, which is installed between your home phone and the broadband modem. These can cost a small amount but are sometimes provided free with the service.
